At RRMac Associates, LLC, we help large organizations modernize and operate complex enterprise systems, particularly in long-running, mission-critical environments, and we’ve always believed that experience outperforms scale. Small, senior-led teams move faster, make better decisions, and solve problems before they turn into outages or delays.
That belief is also what sits behind our long-standing collaboration with Strongback Consulting, a senior-led firm focused on hands-on mainframe modernization and training. We’ve worked together for years and have recently made the decision to formalize that partnership. Not because the relationship changed, but because the work has evolved and the way we deliver value together deserves to be more visible.
A partnership built on how the work actually gets done
RRMac’s relationship with Strongback didn’t start with an announcement. It started with shared engagements, shared challenges, and a mutual understanding that neither of us was trying to be everything to everyone.
Along the way, we made a conscious decision not to compete with each other. Instead, we focused on doing what each of us does best and pulling the other in when it made sense for the client. That meant sharing information, recommending each other for work, and being honest about bandwidth and expertise.
Over time, that approach built real trust. Between our teams, we’ve been in hundreds of enterprise environments and worked directly with the vendors and development teams behind the tools our clients rely on. That experience means we spend less time chasing answers and more time actually fixing the problem.
Working together more formally allows us to support clients end to end, from implementation and modernization through enablement and knowledge transfer, without unnecessary handoffs or ramp-up time. With modernization becoming more complex, that level of collaboration is essential.
Why experience beats size in modernization work
Modernization doesn’t require more people, but it does require better judgment. We see too many projects staffed with large teams where responsibility is diluted and answers take days or weeks to surface. People are busy, but progress is slow. In those environments, problems don’t get solved quickly, because the people who know the answers aren’t always in the room.
Our model is different by design. We rely on smaller teams of senior practitioners and best-of-breed partners who have already seen the edge cases, the failures, and the workarounds that don’t show up in documentation. When something breaks or behaves unexpectedly, chances are we’ve encountered it somewhere else. You don’t need to throw bodies at a problem to solve it. One of the biggest misconceptions about smaller firms is that moving fast means cutting corners. In reality, the opposite is often true. Because our teams are focused and senior, everyone knows what’s happening on the project. There’s no telephone game. No handoffs between people who only know part of the picture. When a question comes up, it gets answered by someone who has actually worked with the technology in production.
That matters more than ever as enterprises become increasingly dependent on always-on systems. When outages happen, the ripple effects are real. Payments stop working. Services go offline.
